Surgical liposuction is a body contouring procedure and cosmetic surgery that reduces pockets of fat from the treatment areas namely the flanks, tummy, buttocks, and thighs to create a more defined body shape. This surgical procedure can be combined with others to treat multiple body parts at once, with a popular example being the “mommy makeover.”

Surgical Experience
Performing liposuction is great for patients who are at their ideal weight but still have areas of fat they have difficulty losing even with the lifestyle they maintain.
Liposuction is not a treatment for stretched-out or excess skin; patients interested in liposuction need to have healthy skin for the procedure. Liposuction is also not a treatment nor solution for weight loss. Women who are interested in liposuction should not have plans of becoming pregnant in the future as this will change the way your body will look. During your consultation, Dr. Brown will work closely with you to set realistic goals and expectations.
Dr. Brown will perform your liposuction in an outpatient setting using general, not local anesthesia. A punch-hole incision is placed through the skin to insert a cannula, removing fat and fatty tissues efficiently. After removing the desired amount of fat, Dr. Brown will seal the small incision.
The procedure may take several hours depending on how many areas of the body are being treated. In the separate recovery room, your post-op nurse will oversee any discomfort you may be feeling and care for the treated areas.
You may need to stay at home to recover post-liposuction for several weeks, especially if you received liposuction on multiple areas of your body and/or removed a significant amount of fat. You should revisit the liposuction plastic surgeon 7-10 days after surgery to remove your stitches.
Bruising and swelling for one or two weeks is typical. After surgery, you will also need to wear a compression garment over the treated area.
The most important thing to do following any surgery is to give your body time to rest and heal. Whenever you decide to return to work, remember to minimize strenuous activities and physical stress. To increase your strength and stamina over time, Dr. Brown will recommend walking and light workouts. After a liposuction, you may notice some improvements right away, but it will take about 6 – 10 months for your new final body contour to take shape.
The cost of liposuction will vary, depending on the technique selected and how many areas are being treated. During your consultation, Dr. Brown will create a personal treatment plan that will meet your needs and goals. Your budget will also be considered. To make surgery as affordable as possible, we take several payment methods and will help you find low-interest financing.
There are several nonsurgical procedures to reduce body fat. Some popular options include CoolSculpting, Vanquish, UltraShape, Kybella, and Liposonix. Although these nonsurgical procedures can help reduce small to moderately-sized fat pockets, surgical liposuction is best for most people.
Liposuction surgery produces more dramatic and consistent results. Still, be sure to ask Dr. Brown about nonsurgical options in your consultation. He can explain the pros and cons of each option and help you choose which is best for you.
You deserve outstanding care from an expert at body contouring procedures and cosmetic surgery. To ensure the safest surgery and best outcome, choose a board certified plastic surgeon with whom you feel comfortable.
At The Loudon Center for Plastic Surgery, your individual treatment plan will prioritize your safety. Under general anesthesia, Dr. Brown will make small incisions into the target areas of the body. He will then use a cannula to remove fat. Removing fatty tissue can be an intense experience, and you’ll need to plan time to heal and rest.
Will I have scars?
Because liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will be made and sutured. This will cause scars. Dr. Brown, however, does his best to reduce their visibility, which starts with making thin incisions in less visible areas or on the natural folds of your body. After your surgery, Dr. Brown or a member of his team will teach you how to care for your incisions so that they heal properly and fade. Will my results last?
Before liposuction, it is important to understand how to maintain your results. While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in a given area, you may still lose and gain weight. Dr. Brown suggests that you be at or close to a healthy weight prior to receiving liposuction. Afterwards, it is best to remain within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Getting pregnant after liposuction will alter your results, but you can receive another surgery to refresh your body.Fat removal with liposuction gives people like you the chance to remove bothersome fat once and for all. Without the help of liposuction, it can be frustrating to achieve the slim body shape you desire.
We will recommend various alternatives for liposuction treatment, depending on the look you wish to achieve. We welcome you to our center in Northern Virginia for your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Michael J. Brown.
Dr. Brown is the best choice to perform liposuction in VA, because he has over 25 years of experience. A board certified plastic surgeon, he’s received many surgical awards and joined prestigious medical organizations.
