After Weight Loss Surgery
Patients who undergo major weight loss are usually ecstatic, having moved past a big burden in life. The downside: while their weight loss represents a proud accomplishment, some individuals will face more frustrations. The new challenge is usually the loose and wrinkly skin that resides on the body. Massive weight loss commonly leaves individuals with skin that cannot shrink to the new smaller size. No matter where the sagging skin resides, plastic surgery is necessary to eliminate the issue. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael J. Brown performs skin removal cosmetic surgery for Ashburn, VA patients. This usually is a life-changing procedure at The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery and is also a lasting step in their personal transformation.

"Wow! What a difference it is to go to a really good Aesthetician with the latest equipment. After 13 years of painful IPL treatments this was a walk in the park. Dr. Michael Brown is obviously concerned with having the latest and best machines. I have been to several other offices in the last few years and they all have the older machines where pain comes with the treatment. Amanda Hopeck is the Licensed Aesthetician and she is so knowledgeable and so nice! I will not be going to my old doctor's office ever again, this wonderful and skilled young lady is my new skin care provider! I can hardly wait to do the micro needling with her next month! They also have the latest and best machine for that procedure. I also want to mention Mira, a medical assistant at this office who is super nice too! I really enjoy talking to her. The nurse who is the Director of Surgical Services, Amber Pappas, RN, BSN, what a nice and sharp person she is as well! Then Dr. Michael Brown, or should I say, most handsome doctor I have ever met! He is SO intelligent, it radiates off him and I am going to trust him to fix something another surgeon did badly. This is a fantastic office in every way and I can't recommend them highly enough. Today I spoke to a lady on the phone twice named Kathleen just to ask questions and she was very nice too! Every single person I have spoken to on the phone or in person has been so nice, friendly, just a pleasure to deal with. That is not something I have found in other medical offices."- D.A. / Yelp / Oct 18, 2019
"Had nothing done, but could have! A very knowledgeable and caring surgeon!!!"- L.S. / Google / Sep 18, 2019
The best individuals for after weight loss surgery are those who are dealing with excessive loose skin due to a massive weight loss or fluctuation. Most often, this challenge is visible early on as weight is lost. If you are challenged by loose skin, surgery at The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery can eliminate the issue and secure the tissue and remaining skin for a tighter and healthier appearance. It is recommended that patients are close to a healthy weight before considering skin removal surgery.
Plastic surgery to remove loose skin is almost always considered an invasive treatment. This surgery utilizes general anesthesia and on average, takes between 3 – 7 hours, depending upon the combination of procedures being performed. Usually, a hospital stay is necessary. A form of liposuction is often integrated during the procedure to remove areas where fat exists, followed by the surgical removal of skin. After weight loss surgery does make longer incisions than most other cosmetic procedures so varying degrees of scars will be a part of this treatment. During this procedure, every effort is made by Dr. Brown to make the incisions as discreet as possible. Dr. Brown or a member of his team will give you comprehensive scar healing instructions for a healthy outcome.
What to Expect
When you are released from our care, you will need to allow a week or two to rest at home. Small tubes may be implanted near the incisions to help minimize swelling and drainage, and compression garments will be provided to reduce swelling. For the average person, it takes about 2 – 4 weeks until you can go back to regular activities, but considering the level of invasiveness, it may take longer. Dr. Brown finds that most of his patients are back to normal around six months. Skin removal surgery can be a life changer for patients with amazing results that are immediate. Once healed, you will feel confident and wear clothing you want and partake in activities without sagging skin keeping you from the things you enjoy doing.
