Laser hair removal has become one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in America. It is an effective option for long-term reduction of the hair follicles on the body and face. This procedure will leave your skin feeling (and looking!) smoother for longer when compared to other common hair removal methods. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael J. Brown and his aesthetic team performs safe and fast laser hair removal for both men and women using the innovative Cutera Excel HR laser.

Reducing hair follicle growth with a laser is a safe process that is suitable for most patients. In your initial consultation, we will discuss any concerns, needs, and goals you may have to decide if this treatment is right for you. Ideal candidates for laser hair removal treatments will:

  • Want to reduce hair on the face and/or body
  • Are in good overall physical health
  • Are not sensitive to lasers or light therapy
  • Are not taking (or have discontinued) any photosensitive medications

On the day of your laser hair removal appointment, your technician will first clean the areas you would like to treat to eliminate oil, dirt, and any cosmetic products you have applied. During the procedure, a team member will stretch out the treatment area to create a clear pathway from the root of the hair follicle to the laser. The energy produced by the laser will disable the targeted follicle, which stops the hair from growing again. Usually, you will need roughly 3 – 5 treatments, each 3 – 4 weeks apart for the best results. Your appointments are staggered to give the affected areas a chance to heal. It also allows each treatment to take place at different points in the hair growth cycle, ensuring as many follicles as possible are treated. Our innovative, state-of-the-art technology is able to target only the hair follicle and preserve the skin and other tissue in and around the treatment area.

Although the treatment is mostly gentle, the treated areas of your skin may be slightly red immediately following treatment. After your session, you are able to resume all normal activities, but we do not recommend heavy activity or lengthy exposure to the sun for the first 24 hours as this can irritate the treated skin. If you experience any mild irritation or discomfort, we suggest using a cool washcloth or gel ice packs to soothe the skin.

At The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery, our Laser Hair Removal treatments are priced based on the amount of time your treatment takes, as opposed to the area covered during your treatment. This helps to ensure that pricing is fair and consistent across all areas of the body, regardless of color, density, or number of the hair follicles being targeted. This also allows you to treat as many areas as you would like within the time allotted for your treatment, resulting in a lower cost per area. If your treatment takes less time than expected, you will be charged for the length of the treatment received, NOT the length of the treatment scheduled.

30 min treatment: $275
60 min treatment: $425
90 min treatment: $525
120 min treatment: $625

How much does laser hair removal cost?

The cost of a laser hair removal procedure will vary, depending on the amount and size of the area(s) being treated, how many sessions are required, and how much time each session requires. Though laser hair removal may be more expensive than waxing per treatment, it typically requires far less treatments in total. During your consultation, we will create a personalized treatment plan for you that will include the total number of recommended sessions and pricing for each treatment. For individual treatment prices, please see pricing information listed above.

How effective is laser hair removal?

Though it is often regarded as the best solution for hair removal, there is some potential for hair growth following laser hair removal. This occurs in areas where the laser was not able to target during the appropriate phase of hair growth, and/or with the appropriate amount of energy. However, most patients do find that the majority of their hair does not grow back following a series of treatments and any remaining hairs are easy to manage. Additional laser treatments can also help to eliminate any new growth and stragglers.

Why do I need multiple laser hair removal sessions?

Since hair growth occurs in cycles, some hair may be in its growing phase while others may be in their dormant phase. Since hair follicles must be targeted in their growing phase, multiple treatments at different times in the hair growth cycle are needed to be effective. Since the follicle is not affected by shaving above the skin’s surface, hairs that grow can be shaved between treatments.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Though some minor discomfort may occur, laser hair removal is not considered a painful procedure. Typically, patients will experience a slight stinging sensation as the laser targets the hair follicle. A numbing ointment may be applied to the skin’s surface prior to the treatment to allow for a more comfortable procedure.

Which laser is best to remove hair?

At The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery, we are proud to offer the latest in hair removal technology through the Cutera Excel system. The Excel HR laser includes a cooling mechanism to allow the skin to be protected. It can also treat a larger area per pulse than any other laser on the market, allowing it to be more effective in a shorter period of time. Additionally, the Excel HR laser is FDA approved to reduce the amount of hair in the treated area.
