About Brow Lift Surgery
Surgery to lift the brow (sometimes known as a forehead lift or browplasty) is a popular aesthetic treatment that helps create a higher brow position, which provides a refreshed look to the upper area of the face. A sagging brow can sometimes cause an angry or tired appearance. A browplasty surgically corrects a drooping brow to provide patients with a refreshed face by eliminating excess skin while lifting the eyebrows. Dr. Michael J. Brown is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Ashburn, VA who has completed browplasty on patients of all ages to help them obtain a more youthful appearance. Wrinkle fillers and relaxers are commonly performed along with a forehead lift at The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery for best results, producing a smoother and softer appearance.

"Had nothing done, but could have! A very knowledgeable and caring surgeon!!!"- L.S. / Google / Sep 18, 2019
"After having multiple consultations in my hometown of Oklahoma City, I still was not !00% comfortable with choosing any of them for a third breast surgery. I found Dr. Brown by searching the internet. After being able to watch some of his surgeries via you tube, I scheduled a consultation. After meeting him I was more than confident that I wanted him to do the surgery. I am about a month post op now, and I am very pleased with the results. Everyone treated me so well there, I almost didn't want to leave. I knew this was a complicated surgery and didn't want to be disappointed for a third time. Dr. Brown definitely has the skill and knowledge. His staff were all amazing as well. They all made me feel so comfortable and at home. I highly recommend. Thank you guys so much all the way from Oklahoma!"- J.S. / Google / Sep 12, 2019
"Dr. Brown and the entire team at the Loudoun Center for Cosmetic Surgery provide the most welcoming, inviting, professional and educated support. They already have a great reputation but they certainly exceeded my expectations. From my first contact with Amber and Melissa for my consultation who made me feel so welcome, to meeting Dr. Brown and the rest of the surgical team, to post op care, as well as additional services such as facial and injectables, I knew I was in not just good, but great hands. I am so incredibly pleased with my results and will continue to utilize their services. The results from each service have me smiling bigger and walking with more confidence. I am so grateful for this team!"- R.W. / Google / Sep 10, 2019

When you grow older, skin elasticity diminishes and causes several portions of the face to droop. This is particularly important in the upper face and usually impacts women and men. When looking at yourself in a mirror, do you seem angry or tired, or see deep wrinkles in between your eyebrows, or are you bothered by your sagging brow? If this is the case, then a surgical brow lift at The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery can be the ideal aesthetic procedure for your goals.
Prior to the procedure, anesthesia is administered. This may be done under IV sedation or general anesthesia based on the complexity of the procedure. The incision performed in a browplasty is chosen, depending on the degree of skin sag, if the forehead is addressed, and the appearance of the patient's hairline. Some of the different techniques that may be used:
- Traditional Incision
Also known as the open browplasty incision, this puts the surgical incision behind the hairline at the top of the head. The open incision not only conceals scars, but it also allows a certain amount of lift control throughout the surgery. The open incision is good for those with both frown lines and a sagging brow. The traditional brow lift is the ideal incision for patients who are concerned about a receding hairline.
- Trichophytic Incision
The trichophytic incision is made directly against the patient's hairline. A trichophytic incision permits a more dramatic lift in the brow for patients who have a low risk for hairline recession.
- Lateral Brow Lift
Also called a temporal browplasty, the lateral method starts the incision within the hairline slightly over the temples. A temporal incision permits the outer sections of the brow to be treated and is best for sagging that is visible in the outer brow. A temporal brow lift also helps to treat Crow’s feet.
- Endoscopic Forehead Lift
The endoscopic lift is a more modern method employed in browplasty surgery. This method makes multiple small incisions beyond the hairline and inserts the endoscope, which is pushed to the eyebrow to release its attached tools. Using the endoscope's camera, the brow tissue is repositioned with stitches to place the brow in a better position.
What to Expect
The recovery period after a brow lift varies for each patient with the majority of swelling and discomfort reported with the traditional method when compared to the temporal or endoscopic techniques. In general, patients experience some swelling and bruising in the upper portion of the face around the eyebrows and sometimes near the eyes. Cold compresses can help to reduce inflammation. Dr. Brown recommends that patients sleep with pillows propped under their head for at least three nights after their brow lift. It is critical to avoid any activities or movement that can put any pressure on your face. The typical recovery period from a brow lift is around 2 – 3 weeks. The results can often be seen right away with a refreshed appearance that seems more alert, softer, and with a visible improvement in sagging skin and fine lines in the upper portion of the face.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a brow lift cost?
It is better to concentrate on finding a skilled and board-certified surgeon, like Dr. Brown, who can give you the best results rather than going with the lowest price. Your costs for brow lift surgery will depend on the technique used, anesthesia, facility fees, and more. When your treatment plan is developed during your consultation, cost estimates can be made. Dr. Brown will also explain additional payment methods and where to apply for low-interest financing to help make your surgery as affordable as possible.
Do I need a brow lift or facelift?
Whether you need a facelift or brow lift will depend on your goals and where you have excess skin. You should openly talk about your wants and desired outcome with Dr. Brown so he can help you choose which treatment is best. Some patients that come in wanting a facelift may discover that they would be better candidates for a brow lift and vice versa. Using his experience, Dr. Brown will confidently help you decide on your treatment plan to give you your best results.
What about nonsurgical treatments?
You may consider one of the many nonsurgical options, including laser skin tightening and injectables (like Juvéderm and BOTOX), that can provide short-term improvements. However, brow lift surgery is better for longer-lasting results and significant improvements. In your consultation, Dr. Brown can go over both your nonsurgical and surgical choices to help you decide which is better for your needs.
What technique should I choose?
Dr. Brown will explain surgical techniques in your consultation so you know the benefits. He will then help you choose the technique that best meets your needs and goals. A few of the factors that might influence your choice are your hairline (factoring in both your current hairline, as well as your risk of developing a receding hairline), the amount of loose skin, and recovery time.
Will my results look natural?
If you have an experienced plastic surgeon, like Dr. Brown, your brow lift will appear natural. He will create your treatment plan for your needs and goals to help you appear refreshed instead of frozen or tight. When performing your brow lift, Dr. Brown will concentrate on removing loose skin. The remaining tissue and skin will be smoothed so your results do not lift your eyebrows too high or limit your facial expressions.
