Understanding Breast Implant Illness: What You Need To Know

Breast augmentation can be a life-changing procedure, boosting confidence and helping women feel more at home in their own bodies. But what happens when you start hearing about something called “Breast Implant Illness” (BII)? If you’re feeling concerned, you’re not alone. Let’s look into and learn what BII is, what we know (and don’t know), and how to approach your concerns from an informed perspective.

What Is Breast Implant Illness?

Breast Implant Illness, or BII, is a term used by some patients to describe a range of symptoms they believe are linked to their breast implants. These symptoms can vary widely but often include:

  • Fatigue
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Brain fog
  • Hair loss
  • Skin rashes
  • Anxiety or depression

The symptoms are real and can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. However, BII is not yet a medically recognized diagnosis, and the connection between breast implants and these symptoms is not fully understood. Furthermore, there has been no causal link identified. This is not to say that there isn’t one but rather a link has not been found.

What Do We Know About Breast Implant Illness or BII?

Research into BII is ongoing, and while there’s no definitive answer yet, here’s what we do know:

  1. Silicone and Saline Implants Are FDA-Approved: Both types of implants go through rigorous testing to ensure their safety.
  2. Capsular Contracture and Ruptures Are Known Risks: These are physical complications that can occur with implants, but they don’t explain the systemic symptoms associated with BII.
  3. Autoimmune Connection Is Under Study: Some researchers are investigating whether implants could trigger an autoimmune or inflammatory response in certain individuals. However, no conclusive link has been found as of today.

Could The Symptoms Be Something Else?

If you’re experiencing unexplained symptoms, it’s important to consider other possible causes. Conditions like thyroid disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or even everyday stress can produce similar symptoms. Working with a trusted healthcare provider can help you explore these possibilities and rule out other causes.

When Should You Be Concerned About BII?

It’s always the best idea to listen to your body. If you have breast implants and are experiencing persistent, unexplained symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice. Some signs that warrant immediate attention include:

  • Sudden changes in your breast shape or size
  • Pain, swelling, or redness around your implants
  • Any unusual symptoms that interfere with your daily life

How We Can Help With BII?

At The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery, we understand how distressing these symptoms can be. While the medical community continues to study BII, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Here’s how we can help:

  1. Consultation and Evaluation: We’ll take the time to listen to your concerns, review your medical history, and perform a thorough evaluation.
  2. Personalized Recommendations: Whether it’s monitoring your symptoms, exploring non-surgical options, or discussing implant removal, we’ll tailor our approach to your needs and concerns.
  3. Expert Care: As an ABPS-certified surgeon, Dr. Brown has extensive experience with breast surgeries, including implant removal, ensuring you will receive the highest standard of care.
  4. Implant Removal?: Some may decide after learning about BII that they want the implants removed. This is certainly an option and in some cases is the best option. The good news is we are involved in collecting data and contributing to the medical community information about outcomes after breast implant removal. What we and the community are finding is that the women do feel better after their implants are removed.
