What is Rhinoplasty Surgery And Who Can Benefit From It?

What is Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery, or a “nose job” as we more commonly know it, is a facial surgery that aids in proportioning the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic purposes or to fix impaired breathing issues. In general, rhinoplasty surgery helps to create a more balanced and proportional face.

Rhinoplasty can fix problems such as:

  • Nose size in relation to the face
  • Nose width
  • Nostril size or position
  • Humps or insets on nose profile
  • Enlarged nasal tip
  • Drooping nasal tip
  • Upturned or hooked nasal tip
  • Nasal asymmetry

Before going through a rhinoplasty surgery, it is important to take every aspect of the procedure into consideration. Changing the cosmetic look of your facial features is a big decision, and the desired final product must be a thorough discussion between you and your surgical professional. Always consult a medical professional before making any decisions such as a nose job.

Who Can Benefit From Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Candidates for nose surgery can have either medical or cosmetic motivations. However, not everybody can undergo this type of surgery. There are some qualifications that must be met first. Plasticsurgery.org says that you could be a good candidate for rhinoplastic surgery if:

  • You are physically healthy
  • You don’t smoke
  • Your facial growth is complete
  • You have a positive outlook and realistic goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance

What to Expect When Getting a Rhinoplasty Surgery

Depending on the complexity of the surgery and what the surgeon professional thinks is the right course of action, rhinoplasty surgery requires either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

Usually, the rhinoplasty surgery takes about one to two hours and can be done in the outpatient ward of the hospital. Depending on the specific surgery being done, the surgeon might shave off cartilage and bone or break the nose and reset it. You should not need to spend the night in the hospital and can be home within a few hours to recover properly.

After the surgery, the patient must rest in bed. Their nose must be raised higher than their chest and will be congested and swollen. Internal dressings are placed inside the nose during surgery and an external splint is placed outside the nose. In most cases, both of these dressings will stay there for about one to seven days after the procedure. In some cases, there might also be a “drip pad” to catch draining mucus and dried blood for the next few days after surgery. In addition, your doctor will prepare you with further instructions on taking care of your nose and decreasing both bleeding and swelling. However, there still will be some temporary bruising and swelling around the nose and eyelids for up to three weeks after the procedure.
