About Sclerotherapy

Spider veins or telangiectasia can be created by hormonal changes, obesity, genetics, blood clots, medical conditions, and medications. These veins are blue, purple, or red and can be visible underneath the skin while they keep branching out on the legs and face. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael J. Brown performs sclerotherapy to decrease or remove visible spider veins on the body or face. A nonsurgical procedure with no downtime for recovery, sclerotherapy may give you more beautiful skin that you will want to stop covering up. Schedule an appointment at The Loudoun Center for Plastic Surgery in Ashburn, VA to receive more information about minimally invasive sclerotherapy, plus other skin treatments.

Ideal Candidates

Sclerotherapy treatments are helpful for women and men who do not like the small or medium-sized blood vessels that can be seen underneath the skin of their body and face. Usually, spider veins are most obvious on the lower legs and thighs so they avoid wearing swimsuits, shorts, or any other clothes that reveal their spider veins. Patients need to be in good health the day of their appointment to minimize the chance of a reaction. Patients should not have a history of blood clots or be pregnant.

Procedure Technique

Sclerotherapy treatments may be completed in a private treatment room within a short time span and typically without anesthesia. The blood vessels to be corrected will be determined, and then the overlying skin will be sanitized. A fine needle will be introduced into the vessel so the sclerosing solution can be introduced. After the needle is empty, it will be removed and gauze will be put over the site of injection to treat any bleeding. The procedure can be repeated to treat all spider veins.

What to Expect

Following your sclerotherapy treatment, you may leave when you feel comfortable to return to your daily routine. You may experience some mild bruising, inflammation, or redness in the areas treated, but this will typically heal in a short time. Compression garments may be suggested by Dr. Brown to encourage blood circulation following your sclerotherapy treatment for enhanced, quicker results. It can take a while for the sclerotherapy to show results, but the treated blood vessels should get smaller, change to a white color, and then disappear or fade. You may want at least two sclerotherapy sessions to achieve optimal results, but many people are happy with their results after their first session.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does sclerotherapy cost?
The price of sclerotherapy will be dependent on the amount and size of the veins being treated. In your consultation, we will be able to listen to your concerns and needs before creating a personalized treatment plan for optimal results. We will then be able to provide you with information about your out-of-pocket costs and discuss the payment methods we take at our practice.

What is the difference between sclerotherapy and laser vein treatments?
Laser vein treatment is a noninvasive procedure that utilizes light energy to target blood vessels in order to diminish the appearance of a spider vein. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein to make it shrink and disappear. Typically, sclerotherapy is a more ideal treatment for larger spider veins and varicose veins, and laser treatments are better for smaller veins, most often those on the face.

Can I get sclerotherapy on my hands and face?
Sclerotherapy can be used to treat spider veins, vascular blemishes, and broken blood vessels on both the face and hands. At your consultation, we will assess whether you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy or if laser vein treatment would be better for your specific condition.

How long should I wear compression stockings after sclerotherapy?
Following your sclerotherapy procedure, a member of our team will provide you with thorough aftercare instructions, including how long you should wear compression garments. The role of the garment is to improve blood circulation, allowing the vein to remain closed for minimized bruising. Additionally, compression garments are suggested for use after your recovery during any long period of sitting, such as on airplanes.
